Lecture on "Prospects for the construction of nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan"

November 3, 2022 at the International Department of Nuclear Physics, New Materials and Technologies of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University General Director of LLP "Nuclear Power Plants of Kazakhstan" Timur Zhantikin gave a lecture on the topic "Prospects for the construction of nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan."

The construction of a nuclear power plant is one of the hot topics on the agenda in the country today. It is known that the head of state instructed to study, investigate and explain this area at a professional level.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, having recently met with the public of the Almaty region, said that, given the country's commitment to reducing carbon, we must continue to increase the total capacity of renewable energy sources. Moreover, due to the constant increase in electricity consumption, energy shortages have already begun to be felt. In this regard, the President said that one of the most effective solutions to this problem is the construction of a nuclear power plant. The Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Technology E.E. Nurmoldin, Head of the International Department of Nuclear Physics, New Materials and Technologies K.Sh. Zhumadilov and students, undergraduates and young scientists of the faculty. In turn, students and undergraduates sent questions and exchanged views.

At the end of the lecture, T.M. Zhantykin presented a one-time scholarship to Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants LLP to six students with the highest academic performance (fifty thousand tenge for each student) and distributed 10 T-shirts and caps with the logo of the National Nuclear Power Plant.

Decade of Science

A seminar on the topic “Scientometric AB-index” was held at the International Department of Nuclear Physics, New Materials and Technologies of the Faculty of Physics and Technology within the Decade of Science on April 2, 2021.

The author of the report is Aryngazin Askar, professor of the NPhNMaT department, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences. It is believed that AB-index (absolute index) allows a more objective comparison of the contributions of a researcher. The AB-index takes into account the impact of research findings while keeping in mind the physical and intellectual contributions of the author(s) in accomplishing the task. The AB-index has clear advantage over other popular metric systems in comparing scientific credibility of young scientists, master and doctoral students. The author spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of this metric, as well as about his recommendations on the use of the AB-index.

Physicists develop a more accurate solution for the quantum three-body problem

Doctoral student of the International Department of Nuclear Physics, New Materials and Technologies Damir Aznabaev under the leadership of a foreign leader Korobov Vladimir Ivanovich, Ph.D., lead researcher at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics, JINR, have developed a mathematical method to solve the quantum Coulomb three-body problem with high accuracy. As a system of three-body, the authors chose a helium atom and calculated its energy levels with best known precision - up to 28-35 decimal digits. The article was published in the journal Physical Review A.

The exponential expansion of the wave functions with the variational basis set for the systematic calculation of non-relativistic bound state energy for three body Coulomb systems was used.

To solve the fundamental problems of physics, chemistry, biology and other sciences, which include many day-to-day practical tasks, it is necessary to have research methods that allow us determining the qualitative and quantitative composition of a substance, its structure, properties and other parameters in wide ranges of temperature and pressure, various aggregative states, at low and high concentrations and other physical conditions. A universal method that satisfies all these conditions is spectroscopy. Spectroscopy is the section of physics engaged in the study of the structure of matter using electromagnetic research, absorbed, emitted, scattered or reflected by the object of study. All modern studies on the spectra of electromagnetic radiation are based on quantum theory, and thus molecular spectroscopy is based on quantum laws.

The "100 New Faces of Kazakhstan" project aims to uncover the stories of people of different regions, ages, professions, and ethnic groups, to show them to the general public and their professional and real-life success model and motivation for the younger generation.

Serik Nurkenov has PhD in Physics and Mathematics of the Russian Federation; PhD in Physics; graduate of the "Bolashak" international program. He has developed and obtained new thermally stable beryllium-based nano-coatings that have important practical applications in nuclear medicine, space and nuclear power engineering. He is the first medical physicist to carry out diagnostic studies using open sources of ionizing radiation to early diagnose cancer, cardiac and neurological diseases, assess the effectiveness of treatment, as well as identify metastatic lesions leading to changes in treatment tactics.

At present over 17 thousand examinations have been carried out with his participation, which made it possible to identify various “neoplasms” at the very early stages of the disease, and led to saving thousands of lives of our country's citizens. Serik Nurkenov carried out his research with the financial support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, also he was a participant and winner of republican and international competitions of young scientists. His works are published in high impact journals, he has more than 45 publications. He developed two special courses: “Physical Foundations of Nuclear Medicine” and “Application of Nuclear Installations in Medicine”, and trained more than 15 graduates and masters in nuclear medicine.

The STAR-NET is aiming the close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The STAR-NET will compliment existing international initiatives including the initiatives of the IAEA by focusing on the area of education and training and will address problems related to nuclear technology, education, training and outreach.

The Regional Network STAR-NET has been founded in September 2015 as an association under the Austrian Law of Associations with international memberships. Currently the STAR-NET unites 13 universities from 7 countries.

Membership in the STAR-NET is open to legal entities (universities, research centers, governmental organizations and other institutions involved in the nuclear education activities) and individuals by application subject to approval by the General Assembly. Other organizations, e.g. from outside the region or international organizations, may contribute to the STAR-NET as collaborating members.

The General Assembly of STAR-NET 2018

The General Assembly of STAR-NET 2018 was held in Vienna (Austria) on November 19-23, 2018. Representatives from 13 member universities participated in the Assembly.
